Thoughts that deceive

2 Cor. 10:4 – 6

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for the pulling down of strongholds casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, (Empahsis mine)bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

.

.

You know, the thought occured to me today that when I have a sinful thought about something or someone, that that thought is actually exalting itself against God (Jesus) which dwell within me. It is PRIDE in its greatest form and guess what… it comes from my old sinful heart – that dump of stuff from my old life. Pride within me exalts itself up against the knowledge of God within me.

My sin says to me:

1.Do this and you will really be fullfilled. What God has said isn’t enough. If you do this “sin” then you will finally fullfill that void witinin you.

My sin has never one time fulfilled anything with me. Sure there my be a temporary pleasure in doing it – but  All I ever felt was terrilbe guilt and a broken relationship with God – and a testimony that I really don’t love God but my own way and will. I need to cast down that which exalts itself against God within me -quickly allowing it no time to take root –  and submit to the TRUTH of the word of God.

2.This will give you peace and rest. Afterall – you deserve it don’t you. You work hard and have for many years…so go ahead – just do it!. Don’t worry about the consequences or what someone may say. Be a man!

Well… once again the core corruption of pride is telling me that my sin will provide rest and peace. I have never found lasting rest and peace apart from my knowledge of God and His truth and my submitting to it. Is there really peace and rest in sin? Perhaps …  a temporary peace that is very hard to maintain, but Jesus said that I have come that you may have peace – PEACE in HIM not my circumstances – money – relationships – fun – pleasure.  Sin never brings real peace. It never has in the life of any person who has ever lived or ever will live.

3. This will be exciting and will be thrilling. You will finally have some fun man… Come on – GO for it! Just do it. No one will ever know.

Has your heart ever told you this? Mine sure has. There have been sinful opportunities that sometime present itself that pull at me. Life for many is sometimes mondain and can be considered boring – when they focus on all those around them “having fun.”  Sin exalts itself here again by promising fun and excitement. It can be related to Drugs – Alcohol – Porn – Sexual encounters  outside of marriage – Stealing money or some item – A party where there are unredeemed folks doing what their sinful hearts directs them to do (they are bound to the shakels of sin and must sin – it is their only freedom in life. Can they really choose to not sin? I say no.)

Excitement and fun is part of life. God created fun and excitement – and emotions – and fun people – and a sence of humor – and all good things to be enjoyed. But when mixed with sin and that which clearly is against the truth of what is revealed – it dishonors Him and He will judge. We – as God’s children – can and should have fun – but only in a pure conscience and a clean heart before God. Then you are free to enjoy all things that God has created within the FRAMEWORKHe has established. Sex should be in a marriage union only – drugs should be prescribed by a doctor for medical use only – Alcohol should be carefully considered before partaking of it in any form. (Ask yourself – could someone who is seeing me do this cause them to stumble? If yes … then do not do it ever! Be filled with the Spirit and not influence by alcohol. This feel better anyway and it is clean!) Smoking – why would anyone want to put some weeds in their mouth and set it on fire? This body does not belong to me – why would I hurt it by doing this? Party – Party like crazy with those who call upoon the Lord with a pure heart. Have some fun – but keep it clean!

Basically… Learn to let the Word of Christ direct you! Cast down the thought that exalt themselves against the knowledge of God. Submit to the truth of scripture. Be filled with the Spirit of God and be free! Apart from us learning to cast down the thoughts that exalt themselves against the knowledge of God, there really is very little victory in a believers life. SO… get busy and rightly divide the word of truth – the Word of God – and be free.

Identify with Christ’s sufferings

I have come to understand that God – in His providence – will allow me to come upon a circumstance that will quickly test me! For instance:

1. Have you ever been lied about

2. Have you been mis- quoted

3.  Have you stood for righteousness sake (Christ’s purposes) and been rebuked about it or called some name or labeled as “being harsh”? Or how about this “narrow minded” or the all time favorite one “brain washed by religion”.

.

I have to admit that all of these have been said about me on many occasions – and that  – by those who I love very much. Even members of my own family! That really hurts! I really don’t mind it when those who don’t really know me say things about me, or those who are admittedly not in the faith say that I am a religious nut bag or whatever… I have had some folks on this blog say that I am off or that they disagree with me – even when I am clearly just re-stating what the Bible has said.

Receintly I was told that I am really out there – that I am hard to fellowship with because of my “odd” ways of thinking about things.

Well… You know, as I reflict on scripture and all the stories about Christ and his disciples, I am keenly aware that there were many comments made about them that put them into a negative light. You see, the heart of man loves darkness and hates light – because conviction comes when we as God’s children (those who have placed their faith in Jesus and live their lives submitting to scripture and Him as Lord) shine the light of obedience as we should. What else can they say – but negative comments?
Today – It was said that I told someone something that I did not say. Not only that – there was another person who confirmed the lie! They are both not Christs’.  WOW – sounds like when the false accusers said that Jesus was going to tear down the temple himself and rebuild it in 3 days – himself – making Him look like a crazy person – so as to get Him on the Cross to die.
.

So… My point is this. When you live for Christ as a sold out christian – and obedience to his revealed will in scripture,  you will suffer. Some may even die! It hurts – but know that you are suffering and tasting a very small portion of what Christ suffered for you and me. SO rejoice when you are rejected – called names – pushed aside – laughed at – they roll their eyes at you – feel you are out there in left field – not asked your opinion on a subject – overlooked for that promotion and given to the more wicked person – ALL of these give you and me a small chance to suffer with Christ So… I say like the apostal Paul said… Rejoice and again I say Rejoice  – because you are sharing with the suffering of Christ and Great is your reward in heaven.

The heart – It is a DUMP!

Jeremiah 17:7-10

Blessed is the man who trust in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but it leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit. The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it? I the Lord, search the heart. I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.

.

.

Today I passed a dump – that’s right a dump! It was on old dump that had been covered by dirt and had vents installed to allow for the fumes below to billow out. I noticed that when they covered it with dirt about 10 years ago that it was much bigger – and has slowly sank and decomposed.

.

The first thing that I thought of is this is such a great visual representation of the human unredeemed heart! Our hearts are completely full of wickedness and rot.  To me, I would never want to buy a piece of property that had been a dump – and try to restore it  to some usefulness – but GOD does.

.

God is the only one who can take a wicked – stony heart – and make it new and usable. I find that God pull out of me – from deep within the dark hidden places in my heart – junk from my old life and way of thinking. He alone – is the only One who can sanctify the human heart. He alone – uses ONLY the word of God to do so. He allows circumstances to hit our lives -and causes us to drink in the word of God – teaching us about our own wickedness – and depravity – and selfishness -and sin – making us to glorify Him – EVENTUALY.

.

Notice the scripture referenced above.

Blessed is the man who trust in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord.

.

.

Blessed is the man who Trust in God – not his own wisdom – strength – Cleverness – education – Stocks – Bonds – Who he knows … Anything – but In God alone. What do you put your hope and trust in? Is it your business? Man… things are tough in today’s world. This will produce bad anxiety in any persons heart who is looking to their employer or their business for their hope and future. God alone deserves this trust, for He alone is the only one who can really supply our needs and desires!

For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but it leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit.

.

.

I used to go every day to a park and have my quiet time. There was this creek that ran thur it – with fresh spring water that always flowed in it. It was cold and clear. The trees had been there for many years – since before the civil war the signs said – and they were big – tall – strong – and very green. There was a bad drought in those summer days that year, and I never one time saw the tree anxious for water – loosing its leaves. It was not stressed out because its root were under the creek bed and it had all it needed and more.

.

.

I prayed that God would make me like this tree – and He has faithfully afflicted me over the 21 years since I started my business. He has taught me where the cool water is – it is in trusting HIM – not myself or my cleverness – marketing plans – efforts apart from him. It is only in my trust in Him that I am able to not worry. I am still learning this – I have not arrived yet but at least I know there is a “Creek” of cold water just beside me. His name is JESUS!

God said this  “I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.”

Well He sure does. I can try things – and it produces nothing – because I did them without the filling of the Holy Spirit in me. It was not produced or done by the filling of the Spirit in me – but rather my selfish ambitions and DUMP of a heart!  But when I do anything that God leads me in the Spirit to do – and only that which is in agreement with the whole counsel of God (searching out the scriptures to know the mind of Christ) that I experience that blessing of God. I must do – try – and strive – but only with His filling – and never apart from principles of His word.

.

Well… My heart still smell sometimes like a dump. Sin is still in me. But thanks be to God who sanctifies me according to His precious word.

God deserves our best

Jeremiah 2:13

For My people have committed two evils:      They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters,      And hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water. Ps. 36:9; Jer. 17:13; John 4:14

Matthew Henry says

“My people, whom I have taught and should have ruled, have committed two great evils, ingratitude and folly; they have acted contrary both to their duty and to their interest.’’ They have affronted their God, by turning their back upon him, as if he were not worthy their notice: “They have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, in whom they have an abundant and constant supply of all the comfort and relief they stand in need of, and have it freely.’’ God is their fountain of life, Ps. 36:9. There is in him an all-sufficiency of grace and strength; all our springs are in him and our streams from him; to forsake him is, in effect, to deny this. He has been to us a bountiful benefactor, a fountain of living waters, over-flowing, ever-flowing, in the gifts of his favour; to forsake him is to refuse to acknowledge his kindness and to withhold that tribute of love and praise which his kindness calls for.

They have cheated themselves, they forsook their own mercies, but it was for lying vanities. They took a great deal of pains to hew themselves out cisterns, to dig pits or pools in the earth or rock which they would carry water to, or which should receive the rain; but they proved broken cisterns, false at the bottom, so that they could hold no water. When they came to quench their thirst there they found nothing but mud and mire, and the filthy sediments of a standing lake. Such idols were to their worshippers, and such a change did those experience who turned from God to them. If we make an idol of any creature-wealth, or pleasure, or honour,—if we place our happiness in it, and promise ourselves the comfort and satisfaction in it which are to be had in God only,—if we make it our joy and love, our hope and confidence, we shall find it a cistern, which we take a great deal of pains to hew out and fill, and at the best it will hold but a little water, and that dead and flat, and soon corrupting and becoming nauseous. Nay, it is a broken cistern, that cracks and cleaves in hot weather, so that the water is lost when we have most need of it, Job 6:15. Let us therefore with purpose of heart cleave to the Lord only, for whither else shall we go? He has the words of eternal life. Henry, Matthew: Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible : Complete and Unabridged in One Volume. Peabody : Hendrickson, 1996, c1991, S. Je 2:9

.

.

I think that many Christians are in the same “boat” as the children of Israel were when God inspired Jeremiah to write this. I have found myself either doing – or being tempted to do the following:

1. Look to a person to fill my cup instead of the Lord.

2. Look to some financial goal to fill my cup instead of the Lord.

3. Look to some position of power to fill my cup instead of the Lord.

4. Look to some achievement to fill my cup instead of the Lord.

5. Look to my favorite sin to fill my cup instead of the Lord.

I could go on and on… and I am sure you can to.

Be reminded that God deserves our best. He is the clean pure water that flows and fulfills – not ANYTHING else. So keep your eyes on HIM and not your broken – weak- impure – dry –  man centered – cisterns.

Job 6:15

My brothers have dealt deceitfully like a brook, Like the streams of the brooks that pass away

When you or I look to anything else other than the Lord of our Salvation – it is like we are putting our confidence in a stream that passes away. We come to it (that relationship or wealth – prestige – power… whatever) in hopes of finding satisfaction and pleasure that quenches that longing that we all have – only to get to the brook – finding one day that it is dry and stagnate – no longer able to satisfy. Then what…? We have walked away from the only real source of clean pure water that deeply satisfies. We find ourselves lost – thirsty – alone – deeply hurting – with no where to turn. THIS IS THE TIME FOR REAL REPENTANCE. A putting off of ourselves – sick and tired of what we have become.  This is a time for a REAL turning to CHRIST – Making Him our Lord. Apart from His Lordship – He is not there and never has been. Where He resides – He makes –  by the good intention of His will – Himself LORD in that heart. This is sanctification – the 2nd part of our salvation.

Lets get our priorities right. Let’s worship Him with our lives in what we do.

Worry – Fretting – Anxiousness

StatementWorryis an assault on the character of God. It says that you DON’T BELIEVE Him and that HE is NOT capableof seeing you through – Robbing you of Joy. Don’t live your life as a Practical atheist and expect the Peace of God to rule your heart. Meaning that the Practical Atheist is someone who Says that they Believe in God – They believe that the word of God is From God and can be trusted – The Christ  Died for Sinner – but they live life as though there is no God. They Disregard the Sovereignty of God and the authority of the Word of God – floating from worry to worry. STOP IT – and Believe – and find the Peace of God!

Ps. 37

The entire chapter is so incredible. One verse particularly stands out in regards to worry – being anxious – and fretting over things we can’t control. It is verse 8:b. It says…

.

Do not fret – it only causes Harm.

.

What does it harm? It harms you!

I have found that the only cure for Fretting is trusting! We as God’s children must learn to trust God in all things. He has taught us over and over again that He takes care of His children. If He can take care of the birds – grass of the fields – etc… how much more will He watch over you? The Lord witholds no good thing from those who walk uprightly! It says in Ps. 34:9 that to those who Fear Him – there is no want! He says again in Ps. 37:19

” They shall not be ashamed in the evil times, and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied. ”

.
Last time I looked – we are in a time economically that in the minds of some would be considered a “Famine”  although the word Famine conveys a much worse situation where there is absolutely no food and water for the majority. We are not there but many are suffering with the current conditions.  But will God allow those who trust Him and fear Him to suffer like those who do not know Him? Will God overlook the righteous? NO He will not. It is against His nature. So trust Him and stop fretting. Start believing the truth that He has taught us. Trust and be still. Fear Him and walk in His ways. God will order your steps.  (Vs.23)

.

If you are lost ( or part of the religeous lost- the many in Matt 7:23)  none of this applys. His concern over the wicked is not the same as His concern over His children. (Those who are in Christ by the election of God) God does have a common grace – but this is limited. The wicked person-  God does not concern Himself with. He desires wrath for the wicked.  He lets them have the fruit of their own way.

But the Righteous – We can REST -TRUST- BE STILL – AND KNOW that our God reigns and will take care of you. BE still and stop fretting!

Our hearts desire

Ps. 37 :4

Delight yourself also in the Lord, and HE shall give you the desires of your heart.

.

.

I like to sometime look at verses backwards – when trying to understand  So…

1. the desire of your heart…

God wants to give us the desire of our hearts. He says that He will not withhold any good thing to those who walk uprightly. The problem that presents itself here is that what we WANT is not what God WANTS to give. We want another realationship that is outside of the marriage – or alot more money to spend on our material – self seeking pleasures. Or we want a sports car… or a new house… or whatever. Now, don’t get me wrong – there is nothing wrong with things or relationships. And there is a level of blessings that they bring – when rightly sought after.  But God wants to be the source of all our joy – pleasure – fullfillment – fun – wonder – and THEN HE can add these things as it seems fitting for us. Seek ye first the kingdom of God and all these Things will be added to you. But not until we are rightly viewing the Lord according to His word.

2. and He shall give you

.

God enjoys giving us stuff – but not if we are going to build our lives on the things He gives. What if you gave your child something, and that thing you gave him becomes the center of his or her’s life – breaking apart the relationship you desire more than anything? Would you give it? God is the same in that He desire to be known by you (according to His word – and not some mystical experienced based approach) – adored – worshiped with a life that is obedient. The very thing He desires to give you is santification and purity by the word of God and the work of the Holy Spirit. But WE – are more interested in  – stuff –  that is perishing –  than the knowledge of the Holy One. Things… Yes He gives them… but He desires to give the greater thing – which is Himself.

3. Delight yourself also in the Lord

.

Hey… Do you daily delight in the Lord? Do you know what I am talking about?Have you ever just been so delighted about what you are coming to know about God that all else just fades away? This is delighting in the Lord. I can tell you that the greatest thing that I have come to understand and delight myself in is the great mystery of the Gospel. Why would he elect me and cause me to know Him? There is nothing in me that would deserve this. I Bring nothing to the choice of God. His Mercy and Grace is awesome and complete. He is faithful and HEAVEN is my home. Now that is a reason to delight in Him. So keep your eyes on the father and all that He has done. Remember what’s important. For the thing (salvation) that He has started – He will finish it untill the end.  This you can count on!

What do I believe about God – Basics

What I Believe

1. I believe that the Old and New Testament Scriptures are verbally inspired of God and inerrant in the original writings, and that they are the supreme and final authority in faith and life. I believe that they represent the full truth of God, and that they are not to be added to.

2. I believe in one God, eternal, omnipotent, omnipresent, manifesting Himself in Three Persons-Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; one in nature, equal in attributes, power, and glory.

3. I believe that the Lord Jesus Christ was begotten by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, and the He is true God and true man.

4. I believe that God created man in His own image and in a state of innocency, but man willfully transgressed God’s law and lost communion with God, becoming dead in sin, corrupt in nature, and incapable of pleasing God, in any way.

5. I believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures as a representative and substitutionary sacrifice, and rose again for our justification; and that all who believe in Him are justified on the ground of His shed blood and are saved by grace through faith wholly apart from human merit and works. This being totally and completely the sovereign act of God on the behalf of those whom He chose before the foundation of the world was created.

6. I believe that all who receive the Lord Jesus Christ by faith are born again by the Holy Spirit through the Word of God and thereby become the children of God, possessing eternal life.

7. I believe in the resurrection of the crucified body of our Lord, in His ascension into Heaven, and in His present life there for us as High Priest and Advocate.

8. I believe in the personal and visible premillennial return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Chris to reign upon the earth.

9. I believe in the bodily resurrection of all the dead: the saved to a life of eternal glory and bliss in Heaven with God; the unsaved to eternal judgment of conscious suffering and woe in the lake of fire.

10. I believe in separation from all worldly practice, in whole-hearted devotion to the cause of Christ, in a high standard of Christian conduct; since such separation, devotion, and standard is the only scriptural basis for a useful Christian life. For this reason I oppose all practices which hinder Christian growth and detract from Christian influence.

11. I believe it is necessary to hold sound and aggressive scriptural convictions of separation from liberalism, apostasy, and compromise with unbelief.

LUST – PORN

Sexual Lust

PORNOGRAPHY, ADULTERY, FORNICATION, AND HOMOSEXUALITY IS SIN

ADULTERY

It is clearly written, THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY.

Adultery is a married person having sex with someone other than his wife. God’s penalty in the Old Testament was death by stoning. God’s grace and the New Testament allows for repentance, if a person truly trusts in Jesus Christ as their only hope of forgiveness.

A man that marries a divorced woman commits FORNICATION. A man that divorces his wife, except for FORNICATION and marries someone else is committing adultery. A woman that puts away her husband and marries another person is committing adultery. Even looking on a woman to lust after her is committing adultery with her already in his heart. However, if the unbelieving person departs from a believer, the believer is not under bondage in such cases. Below will be the scripture refrences for this statement.

ADULTERY—THOU SHALT NOT

Ex 20:14-THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY.

20:14 adultery. Applicable to both men and women, this command protected the sacredness of the marriage relationship. God had instituted marriage at the creation of man and woman (Gen. 2:24) and had blessed it as the means of filling the earth (Gen. 1:28). The penalty for infidelity in the marital relationship was death (Lev. 20:10). Adultery was also referred to as “a great sin” (Gen. 20:9) and a “great wickedness and sin against God” (cf. Gen. 39:9; Matt. 5:27; James 2:11).

Deut 5:18-NEITHER SHALT THOU COMMIT ADULTERY.

5:18 adultery. (Ex. 20:14; Matt. 5:27.)

Mt 19:18-HE SAITH UNTO HIM, WHICH? JESUS SAID, THOU SHALT DO NO MURDER, THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, THOU SHALT NOT STEAL, THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS,

Mk 10:19-THOU KNOWEST THE COMMANDMENTS, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT KILL, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, DEFRAUD NOT, HONOUR THY FATHER AND MOTHER.

Lk 18:20-THOU KNOWEST THE COMMANDMENTS, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT KILL, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, HONOUR THY FATHER AND THY MOTHER.

Rom. 13:9 FOR THIS, THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, THOU SHALT NOT KILL, THOU SHALT NOT STEAL, THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, THOU SHALT NOT COVET; AND IF THERE BE ANY OTHER COMMANDMENT, IT IS BRIEFLY COMPREHENDED IN THIS SAYING, NAMELY, THOU SHALT LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR AS THYSELF.

John MacArthur explains:

13:9 To demonstrate that love fulfills the law, Paul cites 4 of the Ten Commandments dealing with human relations and ties them in with an overarching OT command. He quotes Ex. 20:13–15, 17 (cf. Deut. 5:17–19, 21). summed up … love your neighbor as yourself. This command, quoting Lev. 19:18, encompasses all of God’s laws concerning human relationships (Matt. 22:39); if we truly love our neighbor (anyone with whom we have contact, cf. Luke 10:25–37), we will only do what is in his best interest (13:10).

If we as God’s children are loving our neighbor as God commands, then we will not commit adultery with them.

James 2:11 FOR HE THAT SAID, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, SAID ALSO, DO NOT KILL. NOW IF THOU COMMIT NO ADULTERY, YET IF THOU KILL, THOU ART BECOME A TRANSGRESSOR OF THE LAW.

Gal. 5:19 NOW THE WORKS OF THE FLESH ARE MANIFEST, WHICH ARE THESE; ADULTERY, FORNICATION, UNCLEANNESS, LASCIVIOUSNESS.

John MacArthur explains:

5:19–21 These sins characterize all unredeemed mankind living under the impotent commands of the law which produces only iniquity, though not every person manifests all these sins nor exhibits them to the same degree. Paul’s list, which is not exhaustive, encompasses 3 areas of human life: sex, religion, and human relationships. For other such lists, see Rom. 1:24–32; 1 Cor. 6:9, 10.

THESE ARE ADULTERY

Ezek 16:32-BUT AS A WIFE THAT COMMITTETH ADULTERY, WHICH TAKETH STRANGERS INSTEAD OF HER HUSBAND!

Mt 5:32-BUT I SAY UNTO YOU, THAT WHOSOEVER SHALL PUT AWAY HIS WIFE, SAVING FOR THE CAUSE OF FORNICATION, CAUSETH HER TO COMMIT ADULTERY.

John MacArthur explains:

5:32 except sexual immorality. See 19:9. Divorce was allowed in cases of adultery. Luke 16:18 must be understood in the light of this verse. causes her to commit adultery. The assumption is that divorced people will remarry. If the divorce was not for sexual immorality any remarriage is adultery, because God does not acknowledge the divorce. For more on divorce, see 1 Cor. 7:15.

7:15 But if the unbeliever departs, let him depart; a brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases. But God has called us to peace.

7:15 let him depart. A term referring to divorce. When an unbelieving spouse cannot tolerate the partner’s faith and wants a divorce, it is best to let that happen in order to preserve peace in the family (Rom. 12:18). The bond of marriage is broken only by death (Rom. 7:2), adultery (Matt. 19:9), or an unbeliever’s leaving. not under bondage. When the bond is broken in any of those ways, a Christian is free to marry another believer. Throughout Scripture, whenever legitimate divorce occurs, remarriage is assumed. When divorce is permitted, so is remarriage. By implication, the permission for a widow to remarry (vv. 39, 40; Rom. 7:3) because the “bond” is broken, extends to this case where there is no more “bondage.”

Mt 5:32-AND WHOSOEVER SHALL MARRY HER THAT IS DIVORCED COMMITTETH ADULTERY.

Mt 19:9-AND WHOSO MARRIETH HER WHICH IS PUT AWAY DOTH COMMIT ADULTERY.

Lk 16:18-AND WHOSOEVER MARRIETH HER THAT IS PUT AWAY FROM HER HUSBAND COMMITTETH ADULTERY.

Mt 19:9-AND I SAY UNTO YOU, WHOSOEVER SHALL PUT AWAY HIS WIFE, EXCEPT IT BE FOR FORNICATION, AND SHALL MARRY ANOTHER, COMMITTETH ADULTERY.

Mk 10:11-AND HE SAITH UNTO THEM, WHOSOEVER SHALL PUT AWAY HIS WIFE, AND MARRY ANOTHER, COMMITTETH ADULTERY AGAINST HER.

Lk 16:18-WHOSOEVER PUTTETH AWAY HIS WIFE, AND MARRIETH ANOTHER, COMMITTETH ADULTERY.

Mk 10:12-AND IF A WOMAN SHALL PUT AWAY HER HUSBAND, AND BE MARRIED TO ANOTHER, SHE COMMITTETH ADULTERY.

Mt 5:27,28-YE HAVE HEARD THAT IT WAS SAID BY THEM OF OLD TIME, THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY: BUT I SAY UNTO YOU, THAT WHOSOEVER LOOKETH ON A WOMAN TO LUST AFTER HER HATH COMMITTED ADULTERY WITH HER ALREADY IN HIS HEART. (Note, this would also clearly include pornography.)

2 Pe 2:14-HAVING EYES FULL OF ADULTERY, AND THAT CANNOT CEASE FROM SIN;…CURSED CHILDREN.

John MacArthur explains:

2:14 eyes full of adultery. The false teachers had so totally lost moral control that they could not look at any woman without seeing her as a potential adulteress (Matt. 5:28). They were uncontrollably driven by lust, never resting from their sins. enticing unstable souls. The metaphor is from fishing and appears also in v. 8. To beguile is to catch with bait. False teachers do not capture those strong in the Word, but prey on the weak, the unstable, and the young in the faith (see 3:16; cf. Eph. 4:14; 1 John 2:13). heart trained in covetous practices. The word “trained,” was often used for training in athletics. The false teachers have trained, prepared, and equipped their minds to concentrate on nothing but the forbidden things for which their passions lust. They are well schooled in the craft of self-fulfillment. accursed children. This is a Hebraism for the curse of sin being the dominant thing in their lives, thus saying that they are damned to hell for their blatant wickedness. Gal. 3:10,13; Eph. 2:1–3; 1 Pet. 1:14.

1 Cor 7:15-BUT IF THE UNBELIEVING DEPART, LET HIM DEPART. A BROTHER OR A SISTER IS NOT UNDER BONDAGE IN SUCH CASES: BUT GOD HATH CALLED US TO PEACE.

PENALTY FOR ADULTERY

Lev 20:10-AND THE MAN THAT COMMITTETH ADULTERY WITH ANOTHER MAN’S WIFE, EVEN HE THAT COMMITTETH ADULTERY WITH HIS NEIGHBOUR’S WIFE, THE ADULTERER AND THE ADULTERESS SHALL SURELY BE PUT TO DEATH.

20:10–21 Here are the punishments for violating the prohibitions of sexual sins detailed in 18:1–30; see Deut. 22:13–30.

Prov. 6:32-BUT WHOSO COMMITTETH ADULTERY WITH A WOMAN LACKETH UNDERSTANDING: HE THAT DOETH IT DESTROYETH HIS OWN SOUL.

John MacArthur explains:

6:30–35 Adultery is compared to a thief. Unlike the pity extended to a starving thief, who, though it may cost all he has, can make restitution and put the crime behind him permanently (vv. 30, 31), for the adulterer there is no restitution as he destroys his soul (v. 32; cf. Deut. 22:22). If he lives, he is disgraced for life (v. 33) with a reproach which will never go away. The jealous husband will have no mercy on him either (vv. 34, 35; cf. 27:4; Song 8:6).

John 8:3-11-AND THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES BROUGHT UNTO HIM A WOMAN TAKEN IN ADULTERY; AND WHEN THEY HAD SET HER IN THE MIDST, THEY SAY UNTO HIM, MASTER, THIS WOMAN WAS TAKEN IN ADULTERY, IN THE VERY ACT. NOW MOSES IN THE LAW COMMANDED US, THAT SUCH SHOULD BE STONED: BUT WHAT SAYEST THOU? THIS THEY SAID, TEMPTING HIM, THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE TO ACCUSE HIM. BUT JESUS STOOPED DOWN, AND WITH HIS FINGER WROTE ON THE GROUND, AS THOUGH HE HEARD THEM NOT. SO WHEN THEY CONTINUED ASKING HIM, HE LIFTED UP HIMSELF, AND SAID UNTO THEM, HE THAT IS WITHOUT SIN AMONG YOU, LET HIM FIRST CAST A STONE AT HER. AND AGAIN HE STOOPED DOWN, AND WROTE ON THE GROUND. AND THEY WHICH HEARD IT, BEING CONVICTED BY THEIR OWN CONSCIENCE, WENT OUT ONE BY ONE, BEGINNING AT THE ELDEST, EVEN UNTO THE LAST: AND JESUS WAS LEFT ALONE, AND THE WOMAN STANDING IN THE MIDST. WHEN JESUS HAD LIFTED UP HIMSELF, AND SAW NONE BUT THE WOMAN, HE SAID UNTO HER, WOMAN, WHERE ARE THOSE THINE ACCUSERS? HATH NO MAN CONDEMNED THEE? SHE SAID, NO MAN, LORD. AND JESUS SAID UNTO HER, NEITHER DO I CONDEMN THEE: GO, AND SIN NO MORE.

Rev 2:22-BEHOLD, I WILL CAST HER INTO A BED, AND THEM THAT COMMIT ADULTERY WITH HER INTO GREAT TRIBULATION, EXCEPT THEY REPENT OF THEIR DEEDS.

John MacArthur explains:

2:22 sickbed. Lit. “bed.” Having given this woman time to repent, God was to judge her upon a bed. Since she used a luxurious bed to commit her immorality, and the reclining couch at the idol feast to eat things offered to false gods, He was to give her a bed in hell where she would lie forever.

PORNOGRAPHY

Mt 5:27,28-YE HAVE HEARD THAT IT WAS SAID BY THEM OF OLD TIME, THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY: BUT I SAY UNTO YOU, THAT WHOSOEVER LOOKETH ON A WOMAN TO LUST AFTER HER HATH COMMITTED ADULTERY WITH HER ALREADY IN HIS HEART. (Note, this would also clearly include pornography.)

A NATION COMMITTING (SPIRITUAL) ADULTERY AGAINST GOD

(ISRAEL OR JUDAH FORSAKING GOD; WORSHIPPING OTHER GODS)

Jer 3:8-9 “Then I saw that for all the causes for which backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had put her away and given her a certificate of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but went and played the harlot also. 9“So it came to pass, through her casual harlotry, that she defiled the land and committed adultery with stones and trees. 10“And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah has not turned to Me with her whole heart, but in pretense,” says the Lord.

John MacArthur explains:

3:8 I had put her away and given her a certificate of divorce. Though God hates divorce (Mal. 2:16), it is tolerated for unrepentant adultery (see Matt. 5:32; 19:8,9), as indicated by this analogy of God’s divorcing Israel for that continual sin in the spiritual realm. God had divorced Israel but not yet Judah (cf. Is. 50:1). Ezra 10:3, where divorce is the right action of God’s people to separate from idolatrous wives.

Jer 5:7-HOW SHALL I PARDON THEE FOR THIS? THY CHILDREN HAVE FORSAKEN ME, AND SWORN BY THEM THAT ARE NO GODS: WHEN I HAD FED THEM TO THE FULL, THEY THEN COMMITTED ADULTERY, AND ASSEMBLED THEMSELVES BY TROOPS IN THE HARLOTS’ HOUSES.

John MacArthur explains:

5:7 adultery. Often the idea of adultery is figurative for idolatry or political alliances (see 3:1), but the language here refers to physical adultery by men seeking out a harlot or going to neighbors’ wives (v. 8), thus violating the seventh commandment (Ex. 20:14).

Ezek 23:37-THAT THEY HAVE COMMITTED ADULTERY, AND BLOOD IS IN THEIR HANDS, AND WITH THEIR IDOLS HAVE THEY COMMITTED ADULTERY.

PENALTY FOR COMMITTING ADULTERY AGAINST GOD (WORSHIPPING OTHER GODS)

Jer 3:8-AND I SAW, WHEN FOR ALL THE CAUSES WHEREBY BACKSLIDING ISRAEL COMMITTED ADULTERY I HAD PUT HER AWAY, AND GIVEN HER A BILL OF DIVORCE; YET HER TREACHEROUS SISTER JUDAH FEARED NOT, BUT WENT AND PLAYED THE HARLOT ALSO.

Hos 4:13-THEY SACRIFICE UPON THE TOPS OF THE MOUNTAINS, AND BURN INCENSE UPON THE HILLS, UNDER OAKS AND POPLARS AND ELMS, BECAUSE THE SHADOW THEREOF IS GOOD: THEREFORE YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL COMMIT WHOREDOM, AND YOUR SPOUSES SHALL COMMIT ADULTERY.

John MacArthur explains:

4:13 Bereft of righteous teaching and understanding, they sacrificed to idols. Hilltops and groves of trees were favorite places for idolatrous worship (cf. Deut. 12:2; Jer. 2:20; Ezek. 6:13), including religious prostitution.

WHORES OR HARLOTS

Hos 4:14 I WILL NOT PUNISH YOUR DAUGHTERS WHEN THEY COMMIT WHOREDOM, NOR YOUR SPOUSES WHEN THEY COMMIT ADULTERY: FOR THEMSELVES ARE SEPARATED WITH WHORES, AND THEY SACRIFICE WITH HARLOTS: THEREFORE THE PEOPLE THAT DOTH NOT UNDERSTAND SHALL FALL.

John MacArthur explains:

4:14 Although all who sin will be judged, God forbade punishing the adulteresses alone and leaving the men who patronized them to go free. The heaviest punishment would not be on the women who sin, but also on the fathers and husbands who set such a bad example by their engagement with prostitutes.

THESE WILL OR HAVE COMMITTED ADULTERY

Jer 23:14-I HAVE SEEN ALSO IN THE PROPHETS OF JERUSALEM AN HORRIBLE THING: THEY COMMIT ADULTERY, AND WALK IN LIES: THEY STRENGTHEN ALSO THE HANDS OF EVILDOERS, THAT NONE DOTH RETURN FROM HIS WICKEDNESS: THEY ARE ALL OF THEM UNTO ME AS SODOM, AND THE INHABITANTS THEREOF AS GOMORRAH.

John MacArthur explains:

23:14 a horrible thing in the prophets. The false shepherds told lies, committed adultery, and declared vain dreams (vv. 25,27). They became like chaff rather than grain (v. 28), while promising peace (v. 17) to those whose sins provoke God to bring calamity, not comfort. The scene was like Sodom and Gomorrah, whose sin so grieved God that He destroyed them by fire (cf. Gen. 19:13,24,25).

Jer 7:9-WILL YE STEAL, MURDER, AND COMMIT ADULTERY, AND SWEAR FALSELY, AND BURN INCENSE UNTO BAAL, AND WALK AFTER OTHER GODS WHOM YE KNOW NOT?

Jer 29:23-BECAUSE THEY HAVE COMMITTED VILLANY (or vile things) IN ISRAEL, AND HAVE COMMITTED ADULTERY WITH THEIR NEIGHBOURS’ WIVES, AND HAVE SPOKEN LYING WORDS IN MY NAME, WHICH I HAVE NOT COMMANDED THEM; EVEN I KNOW, AND AM A WITNESS, SAITH THE LORD.

John MacArthur explains:

29:21–23 Ahab … and Zedekiah. Two captive, false Israelite prophets, who had been misleading exiles in Babylon (v. 15), will stir up the wrath of their captor king, who will cast them into a furnace (as in Dan. 3). They aroused not only the Babylonian potentate’s enmity, but God’s also, because of prophecies against His word and physical adultery (cf. 5:7).

Hos 4:2-BY SWEARING, AND LYING, AND KILLING, AND STEALING, AND COMMITTING ADULTERY, THEY BREAK OUT, AND BLOOD TOUCHETH BLOOD.

Rom. 2:22 THOU THAT SAYEST A MAN SHOULD NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DOST THOU COMMIT ADULTERY?

DO NOT COMMIT FORNICATION—IT IS SIN; RUN FROM IT

FORNICATION is sexual intercourse between unmarried people.

1 Cor 6:18-FLEE FORNICATION. EVERY SIN THAT A MAN DOETH IS WITHOUT THE BODY; BUT HE THAT COMMITTETH FORNICATION SINNETH AGAINST HIS OWN BODY.

John MacArthur explains:

6:18 Every sin … is outside. There is a sense in which sexual sin destroys a person like no other, because it is so intimate and entangling, corrupting on the deepest human level. But Paul is probably alluding to venereal disease, prevalent and devastating in his day and today. No sin has greater potential to destroy the body, something a believer should avoid because of the reality given in vv. 19, 20.

1 Cor 10:8-NEITHER LET US COMMIT FORNICATION, AS SOME OF THEM COMMITTED, AND FELL IN ONE DAY THREE AND TWENTY THOUSAND.

John MacArthur explains:

10:8 twenty-three thousand. Having just quoted from Ex. 32 in v. 7, this very likely also refers to the incident in Ex. 32, not to the incident at Shittim in Num. 25. Apparently 3,000 were killed by the Levites (Ex. 32:28) and 20,000 died in the plague (Ex. 32:35).

1 Thes 4:3-FOR THIS IS THE WILL OF GOD, EVEN YOUR SANCTIFICATION, THAT YE SHOULD ABSTAIN FROM FORNICATION.

John MacArthur explains:

4:3 the will of God. All of God’s Word contains God’s will—both affirmations and prohibitions. Specifically, God’s will includes salvation (1 Tim. 2:4), self-sacrifice(Rom. 12:1,2), Spirit filling (Eph. 5:18), submission (1 Pet. 2:13–15), suffering (1 Pet. 3:17), satisfaction (5:18), settledness (Heb. 10:36), and particularly here—sanctification, which literally refers to a state of being set apart from sin to holiness. In this context, it means being set apart from sexual impurity in particular, holding oneself away from immorality by following the instruction in vv. 4–8.

Acts 15:20-BUT THAT WE WRITE UNTO THEM, THAT THEY ABSTAIN…FROM FORNICATION.

Acts 15:29-THAT YE ABSTAIN…FROM FORNICATION.

Acts 21:25-…KEEP THEMSELVES…FROM FORNICATION.

Col 3:5-(PUT TO DEATH, THEREFORE, WHATEVER BELONGS TO YOUR EARTHLY NATURE-NIV); FORNICATION (or sexual immorality), UNCLEANNESS (or impurity), INORDINATE AFFECTION (or lust), EVIL CONCUPISCENCE (or desires), AND COVETOUSNESS (or greed), WHICH IS IDOLATRY.

Ro 1:29-BEING FILLED WITH ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS, FORNICATION, WICKEDNESS, COVETOUSNESS, MALICIOUSNESS; FULL OF ENVY, MURDER, DEBATE, DECEIT, MALIGNITY; WHISPERERS.

1 Cor 5:1-IT IS REPORTED COMMONLY THAT THERE IS FORNICATION AMONG YOU, AND SUCH FORNICATION AS IS NOT SO MUCH AS NAMED AMONG THE GENTILES, THAT ONE SHOULD HAVE HIS FATHER’S WIFE.

1 Cor 6:13-NOW THE BODY IS NOT FOR FORNICATION, BUT FOR THE LORD; AND THE LORD FOR THE BODY.

2 Cor 12:21-AND LEST, WHEN I COME AGAIN, MY GOD WILL HUMBLE ME AMONG YOU, AND THAT I SHALL BEWAIL (or be grieved over) MANY WHICH HAVE SINNED ALREADY (or earlier), AND HAVE NOT REPENTED OF THE UNCLEANNESS AND FORNICATION AND LASCIVIOUSNESS WHICH THEY HAVE COMMITTED.

Gal 5:19-NOW THE WORKS OF THE FLESH ARE MANIFEST, WHICH ARE THESE; ADULTERY, FORNICATION, UNCLEANNESS, LASCIVIOUSNESS. Note both adultery and fornication are put in the same category.

Eph 5:3-BUT FORNICATION, AND ALL UNCLEANNESS, OR COVETOUSNESS, LET IT NOT BE ONCE NAMED AMONG YOU, AS BECOMETH SAINTS.

Rev 2:20-NOTWITHSTANDING I HAVE A FEW THINGS AGAINST THEE, BECAUSE THOU SUFFEREST THAT WOMAN JEZEBEL, WHICH CALLETH HERSELF A PROPHETESS, TO TEACH AND TO SEDUCE MY SERVANTS TO COMMIT FORNICATION, AND TO EAT THINGS SACRIFICED UNTO IDOLS.

Rev 2:21-AND I GAVE HER SPACE TO REPENT OF HER FORNICATION; AND SHE REPENTED NOT.

Rev 9:21-NEITHER REPENTED THEY OF THEIR MURDERS, NOR OF THEIR SORCERIES, NOR OF THEIR FORNICATION, NOR OF THEIR THEFTS.

TO AVOID FORNICATION

1 Cor 7:2-NEVERTHELESS, TO AVOID FORNICATION, LET EVERY MAN HAVE HIS OWN WIFE, AND LET EVERY WOMAN HAVE HER OWN HUSBAND.

FORNICATION ULTIMATELY LEADS TO HELL AND ETERNAL FIRE, JUST AS ANY SIN DOES

Judges 1:7-EVEN AS SODOM AND GOMORRHA, AND THE CITIES ABOUT THEM IN LIKE MANNER, GIVING THEMSELVES OVER TO FORNICATION, AND GOING AFTER STRANGE FLESH, ARE SET FORTH FOR AN EXAMPLE, SUFFERING THE VENGEANCE OF ETERNAL FIRE.

Rev 19:2-FOR TRUE AND RIGHTEOUS ARE HIS JUDGMENTS: FOR HE HATH JUDGED THE GREAT WHORE, WHICH DID CORRUPT THE EARTH WITH HER FORNICATION, AND HATH AVENGED THE BLOOD OF HIS SERVANTS AT HER HAND.

Prov 7:2-27-KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS, AND LIVE; AND MY LAW AS THE APPLE OF THINE EYE. BIND THEM UPON THY FINGERS, WRITE THEM UPON THE TABLE OF THINE HEART. SAY UNTO WISDOM, THOU ART MY SISTER; AND CALL UNDERSTANDING THY KINSWOMAN:

5-THAT THEY MAY KEEP THEE FROM THE STRANGE WOMAN (or adulteress), FROM THE STRANGER (or wayward wife) WHICH FLATTERETH WITH HER WORDS. FOR AT THE WINDOW OF MY HOUSE I LOOKED THROUGH MY CASEMENT, AND BEHELD AMONG THE SIMPLE ONES, I DISCERNED AMONG THE YOUTHS, A YOUNG MAN (WHO LACKED) UNDERSTANDING (or judgment), (He was) PASSING THROUGH THE STREET NEAR HER CORNER; (walking along in the direction of) HER HOUSE, IN THE TWILIGHT, IN THE EVENING, IN THE BLACK AND DARK NIGHT:

10-AND, BEHOLD, THERE (CAME OUT A WOMAN TO MEET HIM, DRESSED LIKE A PROSTITUTE AND WITH CRAFTY INTENT-NIV). (SHE IS LOUD AND STUBBORN; HER FEET (NEVER STAY AT HOME-NIV): NOW IS SHE WITHOUT, NOW IN THE STREETS, AND LIETH IN WAIT AT EVERY CORNER.) SO SHE CAUGHT HIM, AND KISSED HIM, AND WITH AN IMPUDENT (or brazen) FACE SAID UNTO HIM, I HAVE PEACE (or fellowship) OFFERINGS (AT HOME); THIS DAY HAVE I PAYED MY VOWS.

15-THEREFORE CAME I FORTH TO MEET THEE, (I HAVE LOOKED FOR YOU AND HAVE FOUND YOU!-NIV). I HAVE (COVERED) MY BED WITH (COLORED LINENS FROM EGYPT-NIV). I HAVE PERFUMED MY BED WITH MYRRH, ALOES, AND CINNAMON. COME, LET US (DRINK OF LOVE) UNTIL THE MORNING: LET US (ENJOY) OURSELVES WITH (LOVE)! FOR (MY HUSBAND) IS NOT AT HOME, HE IS GONE A LONG JOURNEY:

20-HE HATH TAKEN A BAG OF MONEY WITH HIM, AND WILL COME HOME AT THE DAY APPOINTED. WITH HER MUCH FAIR SPEECH (or persuasive words) SHE CAUSED HIM TO YIELD (or led him astray), WITH THE FLATTERING OF HER LIPS (or smooth talk) SHE FORCED (or seduced) HIM. HE (FOLLOWED) AFTER HER STRAIGHTWAY, AS AN OX GOETH TO THE SLAUGHTER, OR AS A FOOL TO THE CORRECTION OF THE STOCKS; TILL A DART (or arrow) STRIKE THROUGH HIS LIVER; AS A BIRD (DARTING) TO THE SNARE, AND KNOWETH NOT THAT IT IS FOR HIS LIFE (or little knowing it will cost him his life-NIV). In other words, hell awaits him. HEARKEN UNTO ME NOW THEREFORE, O YE CHILDREN, AND ATTEND TO THE WORDS OF MY MOUTH.

25-LET NOT THINE HEART DECLINE TO HER WAYS, GO NOT ASTRAY IN HER PATHS. FOR SHE HATH (BROUGHT) DOWN MANY WOUNDED (or victims): YEA, MANY STRONG MEN HAVE BEEN SLAIN BY HER. HER HOUSE IS THE WAY TO HELL, GOING DOWN TO THE CHAMBERS OF DEATH.

HOMOSEXUALS AND LESBIANS

To practice homosexuality or lesbianism is an abomination to God. It is detestable to Him. In the Old Testament, the judgment for such behavior was death. Their blood was on their own heads. God clearly and unmistakably warns us in His Word not to do this. It is written:

Lev 18:22-THOU SHALT NOT LIE WITH MANKIND, AS WITH WOMANKIND: IT IS ABOMINATION.

Lev 18:22-“‘DO NOT LIE WITH A MAN AS ONE LIES WITH A WOMAN; THAT IS DETESTABLE .” (NIV)

Lev 20:13-“‘IF A MAN LIES WITH A MAN AS ONE LIES WITH A WOMAN, BOTH OF THEM HAVE DONE WHAT IS DETESTABLE. THEY MUST BE PUT TO DEATH; THEIR BLOOD WILL BE ON THEIR OWN HEADS.” (NIV)

In Judges, men having sex with men is clearly shown to be wicked and disgraceful.

Judges 19:22-23-NOW AS THEY WERE MAKING THEIR HEARTS MERRY, BEHOLD, (some of) THE MEN OF THE CITY, CERTAIN SONS OF BELIAL (SURROUNDED THE) HOUSE ROUND, AND BEAT AT THE DOOR, AND (SHOUTED) TO THE MASTER OF THE HOUSE, THE OLD MAN, SAYING, BRING FORTH THE MAN THAT CAME INTO THINE HOUSE, THAT WE MAY KNOW HIM (or so we can have sex with him-NIV). AND THE MAN, THE MASTER OF THE HOUSE, WENT OUT UNTO THEM, AND SAID UNTO THEM, NAY, MY BRETHREN, NAY, I PRAY YOU, DO NOT SO WICKEDLY; SEEING THAT THIS MAN IS COME INTO MINE HOUSE, DO NOT THIS FOLLY (or disgraceful thing).

God clearly and unmistakably shows in Romans that those who practice homosexuality and lesbianism are worthy of death. They shall surely perish unless they repent. It is written:

Ro 1:18-32-FOR THE WRATH OF GOD IS REVEALED FROM HEAVEN AGAINST ALL UNGODLINESS AND UNRIGHTEOUSNESS (or wickedness) OF MEN, WHO HOLD (or suppress) THE TRUTH IN UNRIGHTEOUSNESS (or by their wickedness); BECAUSE THAT WHICH MAY BE KNOWN (ABOUT) GOD IS MANIFEST IN (or plain to) THEM; FOR GOD HATH SHEWED (or made) IT UNTO THEM. FOR THE INVISIBLE THINGS OF HIM FROM THE CREATION OF THE WORLD ARE CLEARLY SEEN, BEING UNDERSTOOD BY THE THINGS THAT ARE MADE, EVEN HIS ETERNAL POWER AND GODHEAD (or divine nature); SO THAT THEY ARE WITHOUT EXCUSE: BECAUSE THAT, WHEN THEY KNEW GOD, THEY (NEITHER GLORIFIED HIM) AS GOD, NEITHER WERE THANKFUL; BUT BECAME VAIN (or futile) IN THEIR IMAGINATIONS (or thinking), AND THEIR FOOLISH HEART WAS DARKENED. (ALTHOUGH THEY CLAIMED) TO BE WISE, THEY BECAME FOOLS, AND CHANGED THE GLORY OF THE UNCORRUPTIBLE (or immortal) GOD INTO AN IMAGE (to look like) CORRUPTIBLE MAN, AND TO BIRDS, AND (ANIMALS AND REPTILES). WHEREFORE GOD ALSO GAVE THEM (OVER) TO (SINFUL DESIRES) THROUGH THE LUSTS (or sexual impurity) OF THEIR OWN HEARTS, TO DISHONOUR THEIR OWN BODIES BETWEEN THEMSELVES (or for the degrading of their bodies with one another-NIV):

25-(THEY) CHANGED THE TRUTH OF GOD INTO A LIE, AND WORSHIPPED AND SERVED THE CREATURE (or created things) (RATHER) THAN THE CREATOR, WHO IS BLESSED FOR EVER. AMEN. FOR THIS CAUSE GOD GAVE THEM UP UNTO VILE AFFECTIONS (or shameful lusts): FOR EVEN THEIR WOMEN DID CHANGE THE NATURAL USE INTO THAT WHICH IS AGAINST NATURE (or their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones-NIV): The women became lesbians. AND (IN THE SAME WAY) THE MEN, LEAVING THE NATURAL USE OF THE WOMAN (or the men also abandoned natural relations with women-NIV), BURNED IN THEIR LUST (or were inflamed with lust) ONE TOWARD ANOTHER; MEN (COMMITTED INDECENT ACTS WITH OTHER MEN-NIV), AND RECEIVING IN THEMSELVES (THE DUE PENALTY FOR THEIR PERVERSION-NIV). AND EVEN AS THEY DID NOT (THINK IT WORTHWHILE) TO RETAIN (THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD), GOD GAVE THEM OVER TO A REPROBATE (or depraved) MIND, TO DO (WHAT OUGHT NOT TO BE DONE-NIV); BEING FILLED WITH ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS (or every kind of wickedness), FORNICATION, WICKEDNESS, COVETOUSNESS, MALICIOUSNESS; FULL OF ENVY, MURDER, DEBATE, DECEIT, MALIGNITY; WHISPERERS (or gossips),

30-BACKBITERS (or slanderers), HATERS OF GOD, DESPITEFUL, PROUD (or arrogant), BOASTERS, (THEY INVENT WAYS OF DOING EVIL-NIV), (THEY DISOBEY THEIR PARENTS-NIV), WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING (or senseless), COVENANTBREAKERS (or faithless), WITHOUT NATURAL AFFECTION (or homosexual), IMPLACABLE (or heartless), UNMERCIFUL (or ruthless): WHO KNOWING THE JUDGMENT OF GOD (or although they know God’s righteous decree-NIV), THAT THEY WHICH COMMIT SUCH THINGS ARE WORTHY OF (or deserve) DEATH, (THEY NOT ONLY CONTINUE TO DO THESE THINGS BUT ALSO-NIV) HAVE PLEASURE IN THEM (or also approve of those who practice-NIV) THEM.

God’s Word clearly and unmistakably states in 1 Cor chapter 6-NEITHER…ADULTERERS,…NOR HOMOSEXUAL OFFENDERS…SHALL INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD. It is God’s Word that shall judge people in the last day. It is these very words that shall judge many in the last day. People can twist God’s Word and say it does not mean what it says, but that changes nothing. Unrepentant adulterers and homosexuals will perish.

1 Cor 6:9,10-KNOW YE NOT THAT THE UNRIGHTEOUS (or wicked) SHALL NOT INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD? BE NOT DECEIVED: NEITHER FORNICATORS (or the sexually immoral), NOR IDOLATERS, NOR ADULTERERS, NOR EFFEMINATE (or male prostitutes), NOR (HOMOSEXUAL OFFENDERS-NIV), NOR THIEVES, NOR COVETOUS (or greedy), NOR DRUNKARDS, NOR REVILERS or slanderers), NOR EXTORTIONERS (or swindlers), SHALL INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD.

God destroyed Sodom and the cities of the plain for wickedness and homosexuality. The message is clear—don’t do it.

Gen 19:4-17, 24-26-BEFORE THEY HAD GONE TO BED, ALL THE MEN FROM EVERY PART OF THE CITY OF SODOM—BOTH YOUNG AND OLD—SURROUNDED THE HOUSE. THEY CALLED TO LOT, “WHERE ARE THE MEN WHO CAME TO YOU TONIGHT? BRING THEM OUT TO US SO THAT WE CAN HAVE SEX WITH THEM.” These were homosexual men. LOT WENT OUTSIDE TO MEET THEM AND SHUT THE DOOR BEHIND HIM AND SAID, “NO, MY FRIENDS. DON’T DO THIS WICKED THING (NIV). Lot clearly shows homosexuality is a wicked thing. BEHOLD NOW, I HAVE TWO DAUGHTERS WHICH HAVE NOT KNOWN MAN; LET ME, I PRAY YOU, BRING THEM OUT UNTO YOU, AND DO YE TO THEM AS IS GOOD IN YOUR EYES: ONLY UNTO THESE MEN DO NOTHING; FOR THEREFORE CAME THEY UNDER THE SHADOW OF MY ROOF. LOOK, I HAVE TWO DAUGHTERS WHO HAVE NEVER SLEPT WITH A MAN. LET ME BRING THEM OUT TO YOU, AND YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU LIKE WITH THEM. BUT DON’T DO ANYTHING TO THESE MEN, FOR THEY HAVE COME UNDER THE PROTECTION OF MY ROOF.” “GET OUT OF OUR WAY,” THEY REPLIED. AND THEY SAID, “THIS FELLOW CAME HERE AS AN ALIEN, AND NOW HE WANTS TO PLAY THE JUDGE! WE’LL TREAT YOU WORSE THAN THEM.” THEY KEPT BRINGING PRESSURE ON LOT AND MOVED FORWARD TO BREAK DOWN THE DOOR. These homosexual men did not want women.

10-BUT THE MEN INSIDE REACHED OUT AND PULLED LOT BACK INTO THE HOUSE AND SHUT THE DOOR. THEN THEY STRUCK THE MEN WHO WERE AT THE DOOR OF THE HOUSE, YOUNG AND OLD, WITH BLINDNESS SO THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND THE DOOR. THE TWO MEN SAID TO LOT, “DO YOU HAVE ANYONE ELSE HERE—SONS-IN-LAW, SONS OR DAUGHTERS, OR ANYONE ELSE IN THE CITY WHO BELONGS TO YOU? GET THEM OUT OF HERE, BECAUSE WE ARE GOING TO DESTROY THIS PLACE. THE OUTCRY TO THE LORD AGAINST ITS PEOPLE IS SO GREAT THAT HE HAS SENT US TO DESTROY IT.” SO LOT WENT OUT AND SPOKE TO HIS SONS-IN-LAW, WHO WERE PLEDGED TO MARRY HIS DAUGHTERS. HE SAID, “HURRY AND GET OUT OF THIS PLACE, BECAUSE THE LORD IS ABOUT TO DESTROY THE CITY!” BUT HIS SONS-IN-LAW THOUGHT HE WAS JOKING.

15-WITH THE COMING OF DAWN, THE ANGELS URGED LOT, SAYING, “HURRY! TAKE YOUR WIFE AND YOUR TWO DAUGHTERS WHO ARE HERE, OR YOU WILL BE SWEPT AWAY WHEN THE CITY IS PUNISHED.” Clearly, homosexuality is such a great sin in the eyes of God that He determined to punish and destroy the entire city. WHEN HE HESITATED, THE MEN GRASPED HIS HAND AND THE HANDS OF HIS WIFE AND OF HIS TWO DAUGHTERS AND LED THEM SAFELY OUT OF THE CITY, FOR THE LORD WAS MERCIFUL TO THEM. AS SOON AS THEY HAD BROUGHT THEM OUT, ONE OF THEM SAID, “FLEE FOR YOUR LIVES! DON’T LOOK BACK, AND DON’T STOP ANYWHERE IN THE PLAIN! FLEE TO THE MOUNTAINS OR YOU WILL BE SWEPT AWAY!”

24-THEN THE LORD RAINED DOWN BURNING SULFUR ON SODOM AND GOMORRAH—FROM THE LORD OUT OF THE HEAVENS. THUS HE OVERTHREW THOSE CITIES AND THE ENTIRE PLAIN, INCLUDING ALL THOSE LIVING IN THE CITIES—AND ALSO THE VEGETATION IN THE LAND. Such is the judgment of the Lord on wickedness and homosexuality. BUT LOT’S WIFE LOOKED BACK, AND SHE BECAME A PILLAR OF SALT (NIV).

1 Ki 14:24-AND THERE WERE ALSO SODOMITES IN THE LAND: AND THEY DID ACCORDING TO ALL THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE NATIONS WHICH THE LORD CAST OUT BEFORE THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL.

Note: May the reader be informed that we do not hate homosexuals, neither do we in any way support or advocate violence against them. The purpose of addressing this issue is to inform the reader that according to the Bible (which is the holy Word of God and the final Authority) homosexuality is sin. It is not an acceptable, alternative lifestyle as is being promoted in this generation. In recent years, a number of homosexuals have come to realize this and have turned from their sins, repented of their old ways, having received the Lord Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and are now serving God in truth. Some even have ministries that reach out to homosexuals. If you are involved in the sin of homosexuality and want out, there is hope for you through Jesus Christ. However, you must completely forsake this practice and humble yourself before God in truth, coming to Him in Salvation.

SEX WITH ANIMALS: GOD’S SENTENCE IS DEATH

Lev 20:15-16-“‘IF A MAN HAS SEXUAL RELATIONS WITH AN ANIMAL, HE MUST BE PUT TO DEATH, AND YOU MUST KILL THE ANIMAL. “‘IF A WOMAN APPROACHES AN ANIMAL TO HAVE SEXUAL RELATIONS WITH IT, KILL BOTH THE WOMAN AND THE ANIMAL. THEY MUST BE PUT TO DEATH; THEIR BLOOD WILL BE ON THEIR OWN HEADS.

WHORES OR SODOMITES

Deut 23:17-THERE SHALL BE NO WHORE OF THE DAUGHTERS OF ISRAEL, NOR A SODOMITE OF THE SONS OF ISRAEL.

YOU SHALL KNOW THEM BY THEIR FRUITS

Mt 7:16-YE SHALL KNOW THEM BY THEIR FRUITS.

Mt 7:20-WHEREFORE BY THEIR FRUITS YE SHALL KNOW THEM.

THE NATURAL MAN CANNOT UNDERSTAND THE THINGS OF THE SPIRIT

1 Cor 2:14-BUT THE NATURAL MAN (or man without the Spirit) RECEIVETH NOT THE THINGS OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD: FOR THEY ARE FOOLISHNESS UNTO HIM: (HE CANNOT UNDERSTAND THEM, BECAUSE THEY ARE SPIRITUALLY DISCERNED-NIV).

1 Jn 2:11-HE…KNOWETH NOT WHITHER HE GOETH, BECAUSE THAT DARKNESS HATH BLINDED HIS EYES.

Mt 6:23-IF THEREFORE THE LIGHT THAT IS IN THEE BE DARKNESS, HOW GREAT IS THAT DARKNESS! If a person believes he is going to heaven or believes he is saved, yet God’s Word clearly shows that he is not saved—the darkness or deception in that person’s heart is very, very great.

WILL THESE INCREASE IN THE FUTURE?

As birth pangs of a woman, these things will increase during these latter days. During the Tribulation, they will continue to increase until finally the King of kings returns at Armageddon. In that day, this wickedness will end as few will be left alive on planet earth.

THE MESSAGE IS CLEAR—FLEE FROM THESE

The message is clear. Flee from fornication. Flee from adultery. Flee from homosexuality. Flee from harlots. Flee from pornography. These all are pathways to hell. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. EVERYONE WHO CONFESSES THE NAME OF THE LORD MUST TURN AWAY FROM WICKEDNESS-2 Tim 2:19 NIV. Because, as it is written, WITHOUT HOLINESS, NO ONE WILL SEE THE LORD-Heb 12:14

SEX WITHIN MARRIAGE

Regarding sex within marriage, the Bible is very clear. Heb 13:4-Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

THERE IS HOPE

There is hope. That hope is centered in Jesus Christ. Repent and receive Jesus Christ as your only hope of salvation. If you will turn your life over to Him, He can and will forgive you, heal you, and give you the strength to overcome all things.

Salvation is the beginning point to overcoming sexual sin. (

What you THINK will have it’s EFFECT

Thought vs. Emotions

Introduction – my thoughts produce my emotions, not my emotions my thoughts

A. How God commands me to respond in ALL situations

B. How God equips me to know how to respond obediently

C. The sure result I can expect as I trust Him and obey Him.

Introduction – My Thoughts produce my emotions, not my emotions my thoughts. God has called us as His children to be Holy, to be perfect, to be conformed to the image of His Son, to walk by the Spirit, to walk in a manner worthy of His calling (Col. 2:6) and to be filled with the Holy Spirit. This is not something that just happens the longer you are a Christian. You begin as babes in Christ and grow as you learn and practice the principles that God has given in His word. There is not any merit to your age, your church membership, and your life experiences that will produce the will of God in your life. It is only as you submit your will to His will and learn to die to yourself (II Cor. 4:8-11) and bring your thoughts “captive to Christ,” (II Cor. 10:3-5 Rom. 12:1-2; II Tim. 2:15) that you begin to experience the fullness that is so often spoken of but seldom lived out.

Let’s read together Genesis 4:5-7 and answer the following questions.

1. When God told Cain that “sin was at his door and its desire was for him” what was God addressing? Was it his emotions or his thoughts?

2. The end of verse 7 states that Cain “should rule over it.” What was the “it”? Wasn’t it his thoughts that would result in the total devastation for Cain and his family?

Read Heb. 2:14; James 1:12-17 for further insight

Please read Ps. 19:7-8, Romans 12:1-2 and II Tim. 2:15 answer the following

1. In Ps. 19:7-8 what is the result in a persons “emotions” when he disciplines his thoughts to obey the statutes of the Lord?

What is it that must have first taken place in one’s life before he can become set free in his thoughts? (John 3:16)

2. In Romans 12:1-2 whose responsibility is it to be transformed? What is primarily addressed – the sin that a person struggles with in this mortal body, or some external force? What is the result of a person who is being “transformed”? (More and more, he is thinking like Jesus – Is. 55:8; Ps. 119:9; Pro.4:23-27; II Cor. 10:3-5)

3. According to II Tim. 2:15, how do we present ourselves “approved by God”? What does it mean to “rightly divide the word of truth”?

Why do you believe what you say you believe?

a. Opinion

b. always being taught so

c. parents

d. grandparent’s

e. SBC (Southern Baptist Convention, or any organization)

f. or scripture

How God commands me to respond in all situations

Please read Phil. 4:8-9.

Statement – Most Christians have read this verse, and possibly may have even memorized it. But few Christians have been set free from anxious thoughts that many struggle with today. Their lives are no different than the average lost person in today’s society. Daily, they struggle with uncertainty, confusion, fear,(II Cor 4:7-11) and divorce. The world’s solution to this ever-present problem is to numb the person with prescription drugs, and to depend on ones self. Jesus came to set us free with salvation, yet how many people do you personally know that really have a grasp on freedom? (John 10:9-10, 28-29; II Cor. 3:17) Is it because it is not attainable, or too lofty in principle? Did God make a mistake when He said in Col. 2:10 “we are complete in Christ”? Complete for what? (Is.55: 8) We are complete in Christ to be still and peaceable no matter what the circumstance. Do you have this peace in times of struggle and temptation?

The following is a break down of Phil.4: 8-9

Truth – (God’s word is the only source of truth)

What are some lies that many professing Christian people today live under and operate on the premise of? Here are some topics to consider and talk about in the light of God’s word:

a. that because they believe in God that they are saved (Satan believes in God)

b. that because they have been baptized they are saved

c. that because they are church members and even serve in the church, they are saved

d. business and money – work ethic

e. family and children – discipline of your children –

f. religion and “ways to God”

g. relationships – husbands loving their wives – wives submitting to their husbands (Eph.5:22-25)

Noble – (distinguished by deeds of character)

What is Character? Why it is hard to be a person of character when no one is looking or will ever know? Is your life distinguished by deeds of character?

Just – (founded on fact)

How does a person get into trouble with other people by not being a just person? How does one’s thoughts lead him or her to being unjust. How does selfishness play into this area of just vs. unjust?

Pure – (without blemishes – perfect and complete – holy and without blame – Eph.1: 4)

Being pure is possible. Both relationally and positional (permanent) with God,( Col. 2:9-10; 1:22) we can maintain purity on a daily basis. How does a person “fall into sin”(no person falls into sin) Areas for discussion:

a. Husband wife relationship. Eph.5

b. The eyes Pro.4:23-27, 14-19

c. The ears ” ”

d. Money, and the love of it.

Ps. 119: 9, 97-105 (104) Do you?

Lovely – (God’s act on our behalf, that was selfless and without concern for His own wellbeing)

Statement – God’s definition of “loveliness” is not being friendly towards someone. What is God’s definition of true “love”?

Consider an act of love that was done to you, and describe how this effected your life. How did Jesus express His loveliness to those who He encountered?

Good report – (That which edifies someone else – well spoken of – Eph. 4:29)

What difference do you think it would make if we as a small group never listened to anything about someone that wasn’t of a Good report? Is this a realistic expectation? How does gossip play into the destruction of unity and peace in a church and a small group?

Statement – The end of verse 8 of Phil. 4 says for us to meditate on these things. In our fast paced society filled with many distractions (TV, playing, sports etc…) it is against our nature to “meditate” on these things, only because we are “self consumed” and do not accept responsibility for the discipline of one’s mind to obey. This person does not hunger and thirst for righteousness. However, just because we are a busy society, does not mean that God will overlook our lack of priority. Society is not the cause your disobedience. In Roman12: 1-2 the transforming of your mind to become Christ-like is not primarily the responsibility of God. He has made the provision, but it is up to you to discipline yourself to meditate on truth. The truth does the transforming along with the Holy Spirit – not the act of discipline. You can memorize the entire bible, and not be transformed. Meditation is the key to change, not some religious act. How can God “transform” someone who never opens the truth? He doesn’t! He chooses to make us like His son, when we open our hearts to the truth, die to our way of thinking, and meditate on what God says, with the intent to obey because we love Him. Do you meditate on the truth? Do you love God?

Please read Isaiah 55:6-13 and 65:2 and answer the following.

1. Where does wickedness begin?

2. Can a person who is depraved become transformed to the point of freedom as he meditates on God’s truth? (read verse 11-13) What does the words “go out of ” and “led out” refer to in verse 12?

3. What steps must he take to begin this journey? (verse 6&7)

How God equips me to know how to respond obediently

Statement – The verse in Phil. 4:13 states that “we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.” The “us” is not intended for those who are not in Christ. Being “in Christ” is God’s choice. God chooses you, and draws you to Himself. He did this before the foundation of the world was created. (Eph. 1:4) Can a person who doesn’t understand how they have been equipped for the Christian walk, be victorious in their day to day encounters with worldliness and stress? The answer is NO! How can you be a victorious Christian, if you do not understand what you have been given, and how to use it to obey God?

1. Read James 1:2-8. What is primarily mentioned here that the Christian has from the father? What is the prerequisite to obtaining this tremendous gift from God? What is it that causes us to seek after this gift from God?

2. Read II Corinthians 10:3-6. This passage presents the Christian walk as being a war. Where does the battlefield exist? How has God equip us to Think? What power do we possess, as Christians who walk with God? What does it mean to cast down every thought?

3. In I Thessalonians 5:21, God in His word tells us to “test all things and to hold to what is good.” How have you been equipped to “test all things”(Acts17: 11) and how do you do this. (Also see Col. 3:16a) What areas should you be testing? Possible discussion areas: a. pastors – teacher’s b. Christian radio – T.V. c. Potential partnerships

4. Read Proverbs 4:23; Eph. 4:29-30. Keeping our hearts refers to what? What areas of our hearts, become stained by the world? Areas for discussion. a. Lust b. money c. positions and power d. other unbiblical teachings or religions that appeal to the senses or tradition. (See Col. 2:8; Is. 29:13-14) Give an example of when you were stained by one or more of these areas – what biblical truth did God use to deliver you?

Statement – The following questions are questions that are intended to pierce you hearts with the truth of God. If you will meditate on its truth and put it into practice, freedom will be the result (II Cor. 3:17-18) You can be free from the fearful and anxious thoughts that are examples of faithless, unbelieving, sinful decision-making. (Pro. 3:4-6; 4:14-19, 23-27; Ps. 119:9; Is. 66:2: II Cor10: 3-5) You will be free to love, as God wants you to love. It all is dependent on one thing. Do you believe it? Do you really believe what God says, or what our sinful – fearful – wretched heart tells us? Your mouth may proclaim truth, but your life will show the results. The bible says that” the heart of man is desperately wicked – who can know it?” (Jer. 17:9) Being a Christian doesn’t mean that your heart is no longer desperately wicked. If you heart was not desperately wicked, then you would have no need for Christ. What does God say about your hearts’ condition and the truth of God? Make the choice and live in the freedom God has for you today.

5. Read II Tim. 1:7. Where does fear always start? When God in His word says that we have power, what is He referring to? (II Cor.10:5-6) Does loving someone who doesn’t deserve it come from our own goodness or from God? (James 1:17) What does being sound minded mean biblically? Does this mean that people who struggle with sinful thoughts are “not” sound minded? (Rom. 7:15-25) How does faith, which comes from God, play into this verse being life changing in your life? Share with the Group an area you are struggling with. What truth has God shown you about your struggle?

6. Read I Tim. 6:20 and II Tim. 1:14 What “other truths” are there in our society today that can cause those who do not know the deeper things of God, to go astray?

Term to consider – “Admixture” – Is when adding a new element to the current element, by which forever changing the character of both. For instance – Flower and water. How does this apply to many of the “new truths” of today? Does truth ever need changing, or need to be up-graded? How does this apply to the way many think about truth?

The sure result I can expect as I trust Him and obey Him

Statement – Some Christians in the church are so richly blessed with the sweet knowledge of God’s will in every place. (Eph 5:2; IICor. 2:16) Their lives are like the aroma of God, and God uses this to deeply touch the lives of those around them. You may struggle with questions like – Why am I here? – What purpose do I have here on the earth? Feelings of worthlessness may plague you. But you can cultivate faithfulness doing whatever God has given you to do without feeling that you are “not a good Christian” if you are not in “full time Christian ministry.” (If you are in Christ, then you are an ambassador for Him) You can come to realize that God finds just as much pleasure in a child of His doing faithfully what He has given them to do that day, as He does with a missionary in the deepest darkest places of this world. Faithful obedience, is what brings pleasure to the heart of God – not what we do as a career or job. His truth is for all! He gives you to do whatever His will dictates, and His will is that you will discover joy in the midst of the seemingly meaningless tasks that we so often find ourselves involved with. God commands us to believe what He thinks about us, rather than us groping for significance in what we do, or do not do. Freedom in your thinking is God’s goal – not necessarily your service!!!!!

1. Please read II Cor. 10:6. From the statement above, name a few things that Christians struggle with, that are disobedient in the eyes of God.

2. Please read II Peter 1:2-10. According to verse 2, what is it that we must have in order to have the peace and Grace of God? Whose responsibility is it to obtain this?

3. Verse 3 is a truth that can set you free from so many different struggles. How can the knowledge that God has given you “all things” right now for life and godliness change the way you think about your

A. job

B. sinful thoughts of worthlessness

C. particular struggle with Sin

Statement – What you believe, will always determine your actions.

Read Pro.23: 7; Luke 6:43-46

4. Verse 4 mentions the “partaking of the divine nature” as having escaped the corruption that is in this world through lust. How is the belief in “self-esteem,” different than that which God gives (The divine nature)? Share with the group the “corruption’s ” have you been set free from as you have discovered the truths of God?

5. As the title to this lesson indicates, verses 5-8 should become your goal as a Christian. The longer we walk with God, the less our lives “should” be characterized by sin. We should be growing in the areas listed here in the text. How can a person know that he is growing in these areas? (see verse 8 & 10)

6. Please read I Peter 1:6-7. How does a person who is growing in the statutes of God, respond when they are grieved by various trials? How has their thinking changed about the trial itself? (see I Peter 2:9 and 4:12-13 for more insight)

7. Please read I Peter 5:10 and Lamentations 3:31-33. What is it in your life that causes you to suffer? The Bible says that if you will seek for Me then you will find Me!(Matt. 7:7) What biblical principle can you share with the group that will encourage and uplift someone else that may be suffering with the same thing? How has God settled you with his truth?

8. Read I Peter 5:7 What a tremendous peace we have in knowing that God cares for us. How can this one little verse change your anxious thoughts?

Ending statement – Hopefully this study has been a stretch for your “spiritual thinking.” Today in our modern church, we here all kinds of things about God, but few ever hear that suffering and hardship is the path we must take to become Christ-like. It isn’t easy to become transformed in your thinking, but it should be ever Christian’s goal. It requires trust in what God says rather than what we think. A body builder never becomes what he becomes, without pain and struggle. God will see to it that we have many challenges, and opportunities to trust Him with what we do know. So stop running to other things to try to fix your struggles, and let God have His will and way in your life. He has so many great truths that lead to freedom, but few ever find them for they spend their lives running to everything but God. Be set free from sinful thinking and start meditating on His word. You will be amazed what He will do!

Forgiveness

There have been times in my life when I have fallen short of what I know God would have for me. I have failed at putting on Christ and putting off the old man as scripture instruct in many areas of my life. (Rom. 13:14) I have the old nature that pulls constantly at me to hate God, love myself and follow my own lusts. (Rom.7)  We all struggle with this, and we will continue until the day we see Him face to face. (1 Cor. 13:12, 1 John 3:2) Then, on that day, I will finally be free from my sin and be like Jesus. What a day that will be!

If you are a child of God and are striving after the Lord, Do you struggle with guilt over your sin – even when you know the father has forgiven you of it? (Rom.8:1) I know I do! I have to constantly remind myself that He has made me pure in Christ, and that there is no condemnation for those in Christ.

Lets see what the father has said about our sin.

Rom.8:1-9

1There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.

Here is a break down of the preceding verses to help you gain a deeper understanding of what is intended.

8:1 therefore. The result or consequence of the truth just taught. Normally it marks the conclusion of the verses immediately preceding it. But here it introduces the staggering results of Paul’s teaching in the first 7 chapters: that justification is by faith alone on the basis of God’s overwhelming grace. no condemnation. Occurring only 3 times in the NT, all in Romans (cf. 5:16, 18), “condemnation” is used exclusively in judicial settings as the opposite of justification. It refers to a verdict of guilty and the penalty that verdict demands. No sin a believer can commit—past, present, or future—can be held against him, since the penalty was paid by Christ and righteousness was imputed to the believer. And no sin will ever reverse this divine legal decision. those … in Christ Jesus. I.e., every true Christian; to be in Christ means to be united with Him (see 6:2, 11; cf. 6:1–11; 1 Cor. 12:13, 27; 15:22). walk according to the flesh … the Spirit. This phrase is not found here in the earliest manuscripts but only at the end of v. 4, perhaps indicating an inadvertent copyist insertion.

8:2–30 The Spirit, who was mentioned only once in chaps. 1–7 (cf. 1:4), is referred to nearly 20 times in chap. 8. He frees us from sin and death (vv. 2, 3); enables us to fulfill God’s law (v. 4); changes our nature and grants us strength for victory over our unredeemed flesh (vv. 5–13); confirms our adoption as God’s children (vv. 14–16); and guarantees our ultimate glory (vv. 17–30).

8:2 The word “for” introduces the reason there is no condemnation for the believer, the Spirit has replaced the law that produced only sin and death (7:5, 13) with a new, simple law that produces life: the law of faith (3:27), or the message of the gospel. the law of the Spirit of life. Synonymous with the gospel, the law of faith. the law of sin and death. The law of God. Although it is good, holy, and righteous (7:12), because of the weakness of the flesh (see 7:7–11; 8:3), it can produce only sin and death (7:5, 13).

8:3 what the law could not do. Deliver sinners from its penalty (Acts 13:38, 39; Gal. 3:10) or make them righteous (Gal. 3:21). weak … the flesh. Because of the sinful corruption of unregenerate men, the law was powerless to produce righteousness (Gal. 3:21). His own Son. See Ps. 2:7; Gal. 4:4; Phil. 2:6, 7; Heb. 1:1–5. in the likeness of sinful flesh. Although in His incarnation Christ became fully man (see 1:3), He took only the outward appearance of sinful flesh, because He was completely without sin (Heb. 4:15). condemned sin in the flesh. God’s condemnation against sin was fully poured out on the sinless flesh of Christ (Is. 53:4–8; cf. Phil. 2:7).

8:4 righteous requirement of the law. The thoughts, words, and deeds which the moral law of God demands. The ceremonial aspect of the Mosaic law has been set aside (Col. 2:14–17), and the basic responsibility for the civil aspect, which shows the application of the moral law in a community, has been transferred to human government (13:1–7). The moral law finds its basis in the character of God and is presented in outline form in the Ten Commandments; its most condensed form is in Jesus’ commands to love God and to love one’s neighbor as one’s self. It has never been abrogated, but finds its authority in the New Covenant. Every unbeliever is still under its requirement of perfection and its condemnation, until he comes to Christ (Gal. 3:23–25) and every believer still finds in it the standard for behavior.fulfilled. Although the believer is no longer in bondage to the moral law’s condemnation and penalty (7:6), the law still reflects the moral character of God and His will for His creatures. But what the external, written code was unable to accomplish, the Spirit is able to do by writing the law on our hearts (Jer. 31:33, 34) and giving us the power to obey it. not walk according to the flesh but … the Spirit. Not an admonition, but a statement of fact that applies to all believers. “Walk” refers to a lifestyle, the habits of living and thinking that characterize a person’s life (cf. Luke 1:6; Eph. 4:17; 1 John 1:7). Since every true Christian is indwell by the Spirit (v. 9), every Christian will manifest the fruit He produces in their life (Gal. 5:22, 23).

8:5 those who live … the flesh. All unbelievers (see v. 4). set their minds. This Gr. verb refers to a basic orientation of the mind—a mindset that includes one’s affections, mental processes, and will (cf. Phil. 2:2, 5; 3:15, 19; Col. 3:2). Paul’s point is that unbelievers’ basic disposition is to satisfy the cravings of their unredeemed flesh (Phil. 3:19; 2 Pet. 2:10). those who live … the Spirit. All believers.

8:6 carnally minded. In the Gr. “minded” is a noun form of the verb in v. 5. “Carnally” means “of flesh.” This is a simple spiritual equation: The person with the mind set on the flesh is spiritually dead (cf. 1 Cor. 2:14; Eph. 2:1). spiritually minded. This describes every Christian. The person with his mind set on the things of the Spirit is very much spiritually alive and at peace with God (see 5:1; cf. Eph. 2:5).

8:7 enmity against God. The unbeliever’s problem is much deeper than acts of disobedience, which are merely outward manifestations of inner fleshly compulsions. His basic inclinations and orientation toward gratifying himself—however outwardly religious or moral he may appear—are directly hostile to God. Even the good deeds unbelievers perform are not truly a fulfillment of God’s law, because they are produced by the flesh, for selfish reasons, and from a heart that is in rebellion.

8:9 dwells. Refers to being in one’s own home. The Spirit of God makes His home in every person who trusts in Jesus Christ. Cf. 1 Cor. 6:19, 20; 12:13. When there is no evidence of His presence by the fruit He produces (Gal. 5:22, 23), a person has no legitimate claim to Christ as Savior and Lord.

If you are in Christ, forgiveness of yourself and your propensity to sin is what the father wants from us. We forgive ourselves because the father has already done so by the death of Christ. Do not walk around with a heavy weight of guilt around your neck. Accept the position in Christ that He died to give you and let sin be less and less characterized in your life.
